America’s Promise's Don’t Call Them Dropouts

Posted by Maisha Meminger - On May 21, 2014 (EST)

America’s Promise released exciting new research that takes an in-depth look at young people who left school without graduating. Don’t Call Them Dropouts is the largest study to date focused on young people who didn’t finish high school on time. These young people left school not because they were bored or unmotivated – but because adverse circumstances forced them to prioritize life over school work. These young people often showed great strength, bouncing back from adversity time and again, and, when finding supportive connections with adults and organizations, they begin to thrive. The full report and executive summary can be found on the Grad Nation website (www.gradnation.org/notdropouts). In the weeks and months ahead, America's Promise will be getting the word out through their new blog and on social media (using #notdropouts). It’s time to change the conversation and get to know the 20 percent of young people that are not graduating from high school.
