Educational Attainment Gap Between Young and Old

Posted by Maisha Meminger - On July 18, 2013 (EST)

Due to increasing postsecondary attendance, for many decades younger workforce entrants have possessed higher educational attainment than older workers. However, in the last few years that gap has narrowed so much that it has almost disappeared. This has important implications for competition for jobs between the young and old, and for when older workers choose to retire.

Given that educational attainment levels have not risen as rapidly as they once did, this development was inevitable at some point, absent a renewed rise in educational attainment among young adults.
